Myomectomy Q & A

What is a Myomectomy?

Myomectomy is the surgical procedure that removes a fibroid. The non-cancerous tumor grows in the uterus and may be as small as a pencil eraser or as large as a softball.

During a myomectomy, your doctor at North Atlanta Women's Specialists only removes the fibroid, not your uterus.

Fibroids are common, and your risk of developing the benign tumors increases as you get older. You may also be at risk of developing fibroids if they run in your family, or you’re overweight or obese.

You may develop a fibroid and not be aware you have it until your OB/GYN at North Atlanta Women's Specialists finds it during your annual well-woman exam.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Myomectomy?

The team at North Atlanta Women's Specialists determines if you’re a good candidate for myomectomy during your consultation. They may only recommend the surgical procedure if your fibroid is causing symptoms that interfere with your daily life, such as:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Low back pain
  • Pelvic pressure
  • Infertility

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, contact North Atlanta Women's Specialists to schedule a consultation to discuss your options.

How is a Myomectomy Performed?

The team at North Atlanta Women's Specialists uses many surgical techniques to perform a myomectomy. The techniques include:

  • Laparoscopic Myomectomy: A laparoscopic myomectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure. During the procedure, your OB/GYN makes a small incision near your belly button to insert a laparoscope, which is a thin, flexible surgical camera. Then, your surgeon creates additional small incisions to insert the surgical instruments needed to remove your fibroid.
  • Robotic Myomectomy: Robotic myomectomy combines minimally invasive surgical techniques with innovative robotic technology. During a robotic myomectomy, your doctor at North Atlanta Women's Specialists uses an innovative surgical tool with robotic arms and a 3D camera to remove your fibroid. With a robotic myomectomy, they perform your procedure with greater precision and accuracy.
  • Abdominal Myomectomy: The abdominal myomectomy is the most invasive surgical approach for removing a fibroid. During the procedure, your doctor makes a large incision through your abdomen to gain access to your uterus and remove the benign tumor.

The team at North Atlanta Women's Specialists determines the best surgical approach for your myomectomy based on the location and size of your fibroid, as well as your past medical and surgical history.
